Which Tooth Brush Should I buy?

maintaining healthy teeth

One of the best and most important things to do when brushing your teeth is to brush for 2 minutes. This is something you should do regardless of whether you are using an electric, battery operated or disposable tooth brush. It is important to know how long to brush, how much pressure to use and correct brushing technique.  Brushing properly will help your teeth and gums to stay healthy. This will help prevent cavities and tooth decay.

Choosing a Toothbrush

There are a variety of differences in toothbrushes. There are different sizes, bristle softness, electric and battery operated and disposable. The size of a toothbrush can refer to the head of the toothbrush and also its length. For most adults, the head of the toothbrush should be about a half-inch wide and one inch tall. The most common size for adults is around 1/2 inch wide and approximately 1 inch tall. This is generally the most effective for adults.

Bristles are categorized as soft, medium, and hard. The bristles are usually made of nylon. The majority of people prefer and use a soft bristle toothbrush. They are popular because they are comfortable to use. Medium or hard-bristle brushes may cause damage to your gums and root surface, depending on how much pressure you brush with.

Always choose a toothbrush with rounded bristle tips.

Always buy a toothbrush that has the ADA Seal of Approval.  These toothbrushes will have bristles with safe tips. Electric toothbrushes should also have the ADA seal of approval. These toothbrushes have been through proper testing to ensure safety for the user.

Disposable or Electric Toothbrush

This choice can come down to personal preference.

Battery operated and manual toothbrushes will need to be replaced every three months. You should also replace the head of an electric toothbrush every three months

Studies have shown that there are no significant differences between electric and manual toothbrushes.

Always consult with your dentist with any questions regarding toothbrushes and their proper use.
